Getting A Handle On Your Head – The Solar Plexus Chakra

There’s Thinking, then there’s Thought. There’s knowing a thing with your intellect, then there’s knowing something with your soul.

Part of my work is knowing the difference between a thought that is just the prattle or fantasy of my mind, and one that is an impression, a subtle wind whispering, one that is worth heeding.

I’m talking about intuition. I’m talking about awareness. I’m talking about energy and how it works in what we call your mind.

Your mind is capable of so much more than you think. Pun Intended.

Thinking vs Thought

I need to make a subtle distinction between some qualities of human mental life. For the sake of this article, Thinking is unconscious and constant, what Buddhists might call “the monkey mind”. Its a verb. Thought, on the other hand, is intuiting, being, understanding, conceiving, embodying, realizing. Thought is waking up in the morning knowing the answer to an intractable problem. Thought is “Eureka”! Thought is “A ha! I completely get it! Mind = blown”.

Thinking is what our neurons do. It is what our human minds do, it is what our intellect does. This useful part of us is constantly active, helping to manage our relationship to the material world around us. This part of our mind identifies whatever habit has trained it to, e.g., noticing dirty dishes that need doing, knowing which password goes to which website, remembering which road leads to Rome, etc.

Thinking also tries to grab a handle on us personally as well. This part of your mind knows what your name is, what you’re like, what your story is about who you are, how you’re the same and different from others, what makes you special and justifies your self-worth, etc. It also talks crap about you when you’re not looking and remembers every awful thing you’ve done that you should never be forgiven for.

Fortunately, you are more than the contents of your thinking mind. Enter Intuition.

Thinking vs. Intuition

An intuition is a simple communication from the universe at the level of the thinking mind. Its not very complex information, like a tweet. Intuition is baby food for the mind. “I think I remember turning left ahead” is thinking. Feeling a quiet sense of, “Turn left ahead” – especially when you’ve never been this way before – is an intuition.

Intuitions are received thoughts. Intuition is passive thinking, much like vegging out to television, but you’re listening IN instead. By focusing on your personal experience of your mind and awareness you can receive information constantly from the universe, no internet connection necessary.

Chances are you do this already. Common intuitions are things like, “I should call my Uncle today”, “it is time to turn off the crock pot”, “I wonder how so-and-so is doing?”, or “it is time to initiate that corporate acquisition”. Intuition can be about anything.

There are also kinesthetic intuitions that you feel with your body, as well as vast understandings (aka “downloads”) that come into your field through other channels. But when it comes to mental intuitions, incoming intuitive information is processed primarily by an energy center in your Solar Plexus.

What The Solar Plexus Chakra IS

Incoming energy. Your own personal internet.

To the clairvoyant eye a healthy solar plexus chakra is a happily swirling whirlpool of yellow energy and information coursing into the body like water down the bathtub drain. Almost without exception, this is a comfortable chakra to have active in people in the western world. Education works in yellow. Engineering and science, yellow. Conversation, where we exchange nice little verbal information packets in well timed sequence, yellow. Counseling and therapy, yellow.

It is very possible that yellow is just a symbolic color-coding I’ve learned in order to work with the energy. After all, what color is Ultra-violet? If I can’t see it with my eyes I can’t see it. My skills are kinesthetic first, and visual through training, so I personally feel solar plexus energy.

Since you’re in it almost all the time, you may not notice your solar plexus chakra in action until something’s wrong. You may feel it when you are anxious, talking excitedly and quickly, worrying or holding your breath. If you can’t address your tension, it may be passed down the line to your stomach or peripheral nerves, both of which are energized in part by the solar plexus chakra.

What the Solar Plexus Chakra ISN’T

Your brain. Your feelings.

Mistaking your brain for the creator of thought is like mistaking the eye for the creator of light. Your brain is just an organ, an instrument being played. The brain adds color, tone, timbre, duration, volume, etc, but it is not the thinking. That’s why we can influence our neurochemistry with drugs, but we can also rewire the whole thing through our thinking habits.

You can’t think your feelings. You have to feel them. Sounds obvious, but THE number one misuse of solar plexus and mental energies is for feeling. It is common to find our thoughts on a runaway train because deep down there was something we just needed to feel. After the feeling has run its natural course, our mind relaxes and is more spacious.

How To Tend Your Mind & Tap Your Intuition

1. Re-Center

Before bed, or at the end of every work day, or every lunch break – sometime when it feels right – take time to re-center yourself. You’re awesome, you deserve it. Notice your mind and what its on about. Each subject is a charged cord connecting you to some event, person, place or thing. Gently draw each one back to you. Let all your concerns be.

Be here with yourself, right now. You may want to sit, you may want to dance, or anything in between. Your mind is part of your body, so help your body be present in whatever way feels best. Feel how good that is. If it feels bad in any way, just notice, and let yourself feel it so it can pass thru. Given time and compassionate understanding, it will.

2. Intuit

Life is a game, so play with your intuition. Next time you’re in the kitchen, let yourself choose your plate by intuition. Which one feels best? This is even more fun in someone else’s kitchen. See if you can get a picture of the cutlery you’ll be choosing. Then use your intuition to find the drawer and pick out the knife. You can even do it blindfolded! This is fun for kids too.

Or set out on an errand, but instead of going the fastest or your favorite way, choose your direction intersection by intersection according to how each direction feels. See where it might lead you instead. Can you get a mental picture of something you might see along your route? Did you see it? Was it what you were really looking for?

If it doesn’t work, try again some other day. This is fun, so play with it! I’ll be you can come up with your own versions that are even more exciting than my suggestions!

You and your mind deserve the greatest peace, happiness, safety, wellbeing and satisfaction that you can possibly tolerate. I help my clients rebalance their mental energies in a majority of the energy healing sessions I give, in addition to whatever else they need. If I can be of any help, please let me know.

How Your Life Is Trying To Heal You, Part 3

Is enlightenment stalking you from behind?

We’re all human and we all carry our baggage.  But what if that baggage was acting out, shaping our thoughts, feelings and health, trying to resurface so we can see it, address it, be unburdened by it, be happier, healthier and more present?

Well, that is exactly what is happening.  Just as an old tree sheds limbs it grew in youth that it just can’t carry any further, so too do we.

Here’s Part 3 of a 3-part series on our hidden and not-so-hidden wounds.

Part 1 laid the foundation of why and how we ‘bury our stuff’ and ‘pack our baggage’: When life is too much we block it, and blocks = baggage.

Part 2 hit on how our blocks shape who we are.  Did you relate to any of these common themes?  Go back and see what resonates with you.

Today: Your blocks are constantly trying to resurface for healing!  Every struggle in your life has a component that is trying to get your attention and shower you with blessings!

Your Blocks Are

Constantly Resurfacing For Healing

My wise wife says there’s a difference between pain and suffering.  Pain is pain, its a part of life, it happens naturally, no gettin’ around it.  Suffering is pain we’ve created that didn’t have to happen.  Like when things are bad but we make them worse by playing the victim, blaming others, or not doing what we can to take responsibility for our circumstances or care for ourselves.

Its different for kids, right?  How many times a day does a toddler get super-happy, cry tears, get angry, and then cuddly and snuggly?  Kids are more flexible than we are, but they don’t have access to the same inner resources as an adult who must be responsible for themselves.

The energy we have as kids continues in young-adulthood and compensates for any imbalances and blocks we’ve carried through from childhood.  As we age though, our bodies show the strain, and lead to the litany of human sufferings.  That upright posture may become a stiff and easily injured back.  All that trying to control things may lead to hypertension or a heart attack.  That overeating may lead to diabetes.  All of them diminish our relationships and happiness.

This is where you want to have Part 1 and Part 2 in mind, ’cause we’re going to build on them.

Blocks are derived from experiences we were unable to handle that became parts of our fields, our bodies, and our personalities.  Parts of the behavior of your field, body, and personality have been created to protect yourself from these blocks.

Protecting yourself won’t work forever.  What you resist persists.  Pushing against something just puts energy into it.  Eventually your weak spot will be triggered and present itself to you to be seen and healed.

When you become aware of what’s going on, every calamity becomes an opportunity, every pain becomes a chance to grow smarter and wiser, and every limitation becomes a strength.  The truth is…

Your Baggage = Your Secret Superpower

I kid you not.  Want to know what yours is and how to begin to unlock it?

The following dynamics color everything my clients come to me to address.  How and when these play out are complex and utterly unique to each person.

Here’s what people often need to do to heal, and the profound gifts they unlock:

Be real.

Do you feel like you or others around you always need to be perfect?  Your superpower is your enormous capacity to tap into reality and make things happen!  Sound lackluster?  You lead the world, and society is shaped by your every choice.  As you start to heal you’ll do it more consciously, with a powerful inner compass.  Find your feelings and put your natural passion and consistency in service of the real you.

Express yourself.

Do you need to reclaim your body, your time, your life as your own?  Your secret superpower is how much you have to give!  As you start to heal you’ll release the tension of holding it all in and let your bubbling creativity and caring shine in whatever way you choose.

Surrender.

This is a tough one, but do you ever find yourself lying or being manipulative in order to win?  Your secret superpower is your honesty, integrity and heroism.  It’s one of life’s oxymorons.  You are the champion of causes.   As you start to heal you’ll deflate puffed up parts of yourself, let go of all that control and come hang out with the rest of us.  We could use your leadership, your vision, and your great big, courageous heart.

Fill yourself up and give.

Do you hunger for love and affection?  Your secret superpower is your ability to connect with others and give.  It might seem like a little thing, but its enough and the world needs it.  As you start to heal you’ll stop grabbing for more and notice all that you are getting already.  Find your fulfillment sharing the things you love with others.

Love yourself and connect.

Is your surreal life out to get you?  Is the world an unsafe mess?  Your secret superpower is your humanness and insight.  As you start to heal you’ll release the hidden terror rage you’ve felt toward the world.  Life’s not all sunshine and fluffy pillows, but its not razor blades and Armageddon either.  As messy as it is, it can be an amazing journey.  Come thaw the ice inside you and joined in.

When we begin to heal suddenly everywhere we have trouble, get stuck, fail, and suffer also points right at where we are going to become most awesome, expert and insightful.

In conclusion, before something turns to illness or calamity, it usually starts poking its head up.   By the time things fall apart, something is really trying to get you to pay attention.  As soon as you notice, something miraculous begins to shift.  This is the heart of healing.

And the rabbit hole goes a long way down.

If you want to get into this further for yourself, contact me for a session.  I’m always honored to support you with the notes I play and the hands I lay.  Thank you for having me along on your journey!

How To Have A Healing Holiday Season

If you are blessed with the burden of a big heart, the holidays can be the best and worst of times.  But all holidays are healing when we pause, gather together and reflect.  In fact, the same powerful healing potential exists now as at any time in your life.

I’ve got a simple tip to help you decrease your pain, increase your joy, and tap you into the best that the season has to offer.  It draws from the same principles that underlie healing sessions.

Step one: on Christmas be Jewish, go out to Chinese food and see a movie, very relaxing.  I’m kidding.

In the Christian-centric Western world, no holiday has survived secularization and commercialism so well to still contain so many overt messages of peace, love, and joy.  These are among the highest experiences we can have in our lives.

Peace, joy and love are a natural part of us, and go hand-in-hand with healing.  When we are able to stay present – really present – with what’s going on in and around us, peace, joy and love can arise fairly effortlessly.

What stops them?  I hope I’m preaching to the choir: When we feel something that’s too much for us – pain OR joy – we block it.  Blocking your energies is not necessarily a bad thing!  Its how we get through all the stuff we need to do, and take care of ourselves and others around us.

When you celebrate holidays – especially by taking time off work with family – more of both pain and joy will be available.  If you want to do more than ‘just get through’, here’s what to do, in simplest terms, only the truth:

Salve pain with forgiveness, love, grief, healing.

Fertilize joy with more joy.

Like this:

First, you have to notice.  What’s going on?  How do I feel?  What started this?  Has this happened before?  Am I caught in a cycle?  You can’t wish it away, Dorothy, but the power of paying attention sets the foundation for everything to come.  It just might blow your mind.

Forgive yourself all that you have done to hurt yourself and others – especially the people you love – as you make your way imperfectly in an imperfect world.

Grieve your losses, family and friends who are gone or won’t change, jobs and living situations that have changed, the aging of your body, or dreams and opportunities that have passed beyond reach.  Grief softens and opens your heart.  Even when we lose something that hurt us, like a painful job or relationship, we will grieve it’s passing on some level.

Love who you are, who they are, accept them both, as is, faults and all.  You’re worthy of love, you really are.

Heal.  All of this is healing, and healing can be in any and everything in your life.  A kind word, a ray of sun, a song on the radio, a great Facebook share, a moment to pause for any reason, all can catalyze you to loosen your burdens and open to greater happiness and health.

Joy is abundant, get some!  Gaze at the night sky.  Do something stupid and goofy for no reason.  Hang out with a small child.  Do what you love, be with who you do and can love.  Include it/them in your holiday plans.  Make sure of it.  If it doesn’t happen, refer to the previous steps.

Sound simple?  You got it! Go for it!

Easier said than done?  I’m here to help.  Healing sessions are a gift to give and receive!  No discounts, no gimmicks, no special packages.  Just all the healing goodness in the universe you can stand, available to you.

Final Thoughts

Healing your world,

your country, your community,

and your family begins

with healing yourself.

One thing all of my clients have in common is that in ways big and small you’re all trying to make the world a better place.  Healing and music are part of how I do that.  I’m always honored to support you with the notes I play and the hands I lay.  Thank you for having me along on your journey!

In the new year I’ll share a series on our hidden and perhaps not-so-hidden wounds, how and why we bury them, the simple ways they shape who we are, and how they are constantly trying to resurface for healing.  The whole process is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful gifts you can imagine.  I’ll help you imagine it.  ‘Til then…

Peaceful Nature Music Meditation – Lincoln Crockett – Abraham’s Lament

The essence of healing is being in a state of nonresistance to what is. Nature is in that state, by its very nature, right?

If you can’t get out, this is the perfect way to reset and find peace when you need a short break: Long shots of simple, beautiful nature scenes set to my acoustic instrumentalal ‘Abraham’s Lament’.

Relax into the song, sounds of nature, and meditate on the scenery slowly passing by to arrive at the end calm and refreshed.

‘Abraham’s Lament’ appears on the album ANGELS & DEVILS ALIKE, available on iTunes and at CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/lincolncrockett2.
